My acupuncture story:
Started at PCOM in 1999, dropped out in 2000. Took an 8-year, um, "leave of absence". Back in full force.
My favorite modality:
Internal arts - ba gua, nei gung, chen pan ling tai chi
About Me:
I love to surf, dance, make art, cook (and eat!) locally-grown, organic foods, spend time outdoors (especially the beach), hang with friends and occasionally wander aimlessly and people watch by myself in the city.

I have a passion for travel and I spent a lot of time in my 20s abroad, in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Mexico & Central America and Europe.

I've been practicing martial arts for almost 20 years, with a focus on the internal arts (ba gua, nei gung and tai chi) over the past few years. Spiritual practice is a central part of my life. My father exposed me to meditation when I was in high school, and I discovered Zen Buddhism in my early 20s. I'm now a formal student of Darlene Cohen in the Suzuki Roshi lineage. She's an inspiring yet down-to-earth teacher, and I feel very blessed to practice with her.

I publish a blog called The Healthy Skeptic which is dedicated to challenging mainstream myths on nutrition, health and disease.

Tai Chi Exercise Reduces Knee Osteoarthritis Pain In The Elderly, Research Shows

Researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine have determined that patients over 65 years of age with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who engage in regular Tai Chi exercise improve physical function and experience less pain. Tai Chi (Chuan) is a traditional style of Chinese martial arts that features slow, rhythmic movements to induce mental relaxation and enhance balance, strength, flexibility, and self-efficacy.… Continue

Where's the beef?

You might have seen an article in your newspaper or online touting a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine that “strongly” linked red meat consumption with cancer and an increased risk of death. Heck, how could you miss it? Google shows 547 new articles about the study, and it was mentioned in just about every major newspaper in the U.S.

(That’s not an accident, by the way. It’s an intentional attack by the tyrannical meat-hating scientific majority, the same folks who bro… Continue

Hands-down the best book on Chinese Medicine I've ever read

This should be mandatory in all school curricula, IMO. My wife doesn't know that much about Chinese Medicine, but she picked it up the other day and had a hard time putting it down. It's very well written and utilizes both a modern format and the traditional format of dialogues between teacher (Wang Ju-Yi) and student (Jason Robertson). It breathes life and vitality into the medicine. I highly recommend it!

Air Force to use "battlefield acupuncture" to relieve pain

Air Force to Use 'Battlefield Acupuncture' for Pain Relief

By Noah Shachtman December 11, 2008

The military medical community has been using all sorts of alternative therapies -- yoga, meditation, even animal-petting -- to ease the strains of post-traumatic stress disorder FOR returning troops. One of the non-traditional treatments will be used in a war zone for the first time.

"The Air Force will begin teaching 'battlef… Continue

Exercise in a pill!

Don't like to exercise? Don't have time? Don't worry! Scientists have just developed a pill that will mimic the benefits of exercise. (Full story)

This sounds like something straight out of George Lucas's THX-1199, Gattaca or any other dystopic sci-fi movie. I wish it was.

I don't even know where to start with this one. What's next? A pill for relaxation, happiness and sexual prowess? Oh wait, we already have pills for that. What about… Continue

Just changed the settings for this site to require moderator approval on new accounts. Hopefully that will help minimize the spamming.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Chris. I banned Donnie Darko and adam smith (who actually spammed my page - ugh.)

Hey Chris,

That spammer has been banned. We use an "out-of-the-box" package for our social network, which means that we're limited to its functionality. I'll take a look to see if using captchas is an option.

Hey Chris,
I wanted to get your opinion on Cod Liver Oil. Trying to decide on a good source of EFA's...I hear different things about CLO. Too much VitA? I think I remember you saying something about CLO in your cholesterol talk. I tried your website but thought I would just ask you directly. Thanks!

David,

I completely forgot about the video. I'm at school Mondays and Wednesdays. Maybe I could bring my laptop one of those days? When are you around?
