My Tagline:

Acupuncture education/license level:
2nd Year
My acupuncture story:
Started at PCOM in 1999, dropped out in 2000. Took an 8-year, um, "leave of absence". Back in full force.
My favorite modality:
Internal arts - ba gua, nei gung, chen pan ling tai chi
About Me:
I love to surf, dance, make art, cook (and eat!) locally-grown, organic foods, spend time outdoors (especially the beach), hang with friends and occasionally wander aimlessly and people watch by myself in the city.

I have a passion for travel and I spent a lot of time in my 20s abroad, in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Mexico & Central America and Europe.

I've been practicing martial arts for almost 20 years, with a focus on the internal arts (ba gua, nei gung and tai chi) over the past few years. Spiritual practice is a central part of my life. My father exposed me to meditation when I was in high school, and I discovered Zen Buddhism in my early 20s. I'm now a formal student of Darlene Cohen in the Suzuki Roshi lineage. She's an inspiring yet down-to-earth teacher, and I feel very blessed to practice with her.

I publish a blog called The Healthy Skeptic which is dedicated to challenging mainstream myths on nutrition, health and disease.

Exercise in a pill!

Don't like to exercise? Don't have time? Don't worry! Scientists have just developed a pill that will mimic the benefits of exercise. (Full story) This sounds like something straight out of George Lucas's THX-1199, Gattaca or any other dystopic sci-fi movie. I wish it was. I don't even know where to start with this one. What's next? A pill for relaxation, happiness and sexual prowess? Oh wait, we already have pills for that. What about… Continue

Soy linked to low-sperm count (infertility) in men

See here for details: link In spite of the author's claim that there is "no cause for worry or reducing consumption of soy products" yet, I beg to differ. Countless studies have confirmed the dangerous effects of soy products for both men and women (and especially kids) alike. See here for more info: link

The heart of depression

The treatment of depression with drugs is based on the enormous collective delusion that psychiatric drugs act by correcting a chemical imbalance in the brain. As a result, a large percentage of the population has been convinced to take drugs in order to deal with the problems of daily life. Everything from break-ups to job difficulties to worries about the future have been transformed into “chemical problems”. The myth that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance has permeated public cons… Continue

The "chemical imbalance" myth

The idea that depression and other mental health conditions are caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain is so deeply ingrained in our psyche that it seems almost sacrilegious to question it. Yet a thorough review of the evidence reveals that there is absolutely no evidence supporting the idea that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, and an abundance of evidence that contradicts it. This is crucial, of course, because this "chemical imbalance" theory is the entire rationale b… Continue

The Soy Ploy

Although widely promoted as a health food, hundreds of studies link modern processed soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, immune system breakdown, and even heart disease and cancer. How could soy be linked to all this disease? Because the soybean contains many naturally occurring toxins. All legumes contain toxins but the problem with soy is that the toxins are found in very high levels and are resistant to the traditional ways… Continue

Hey Chris,
I wanted to get your opinion on Cod Liver Oil. Trying to decide on a good source of EFA's...I hear different things about CLO. Too much VitA? I think I remember you saying something about CLO in your cholesterol talk. I tried your website but thought I would just ask you directly. Thanks!

Just wanted to tell you how much I've been enjoying your blog, The Healthy Skeptic, especially the articles on heart disease and nutrition.

I'll be starting AIMC in the fall. Hope I can catch one of your lectures.

David,

I completely forgot about the video. I'm at school Mondays and Wednesdays. Maybe I could bring my laptop one of those days? When are you around?

Hi Chris~ I really enjoyed your talk! It was so informative and very well put together. I wanted to forward you a couple of contacts for the event called "The Big One" in mid-June. Darrow is who I generally speak with. I believe she is coordinating the health and wellness part of the event. Her email is darrow@snbc.org. Tori is the coordinator of the event overall and her email is tjacobs@stuartfoundation.org. I went to New College with her~ she's been organizing this event for at least the last year for her Master's project. The projects overall website is beautifulcommunities.org. I let both Tori and Darrow know you might be contacting them.

Thanks again for your great talk!

You can send a message to all members of a group if you are the group owner or a moderator. Regular group members cannot do this; that's a good thing, otherwise these sites would attract spammers. Of course, you can simply start a discussion in that group. That is, after all, what they are intended to to.

Hey Chris! Can i get the file of your presentation to share with family and friends? It is easier to just show it to them and try and give them bits and pieces... Thank you.
